GAMSAT Digest #027 - Electromagnetism
ACER makes it very clear that a certain knowledge of basic university-level science is assumed for Section 3.
But here's the thing:
Why is it that some science-background students struggle and some non-science-background students succeed?
Some students seem to have an amount of exposure to theoretical knowledge in the sciences, stellar GPAs, and still perform poorly in Section 3.
Why?
I'll tell you why: it's because they lack intuition and depth of understanding.
That's not their fault. It's because the exercises they've been doing at uni are calculation heavy and focus much more on straight-forward application of basic principles.
There is no focus on intuition and depth on understanding.
So here's our approach:
In each Section 3 edition, we'll
1. Introduce some definitions pertaining to some specific high-yield science topic
2. Provide a large amount of questions related to that topic–questions designed to test intuitive understanding, not mindless regurgitation
3. Provide extensive solutions
Now, a note on the solutions: they're not merely a, b, c or d–they give extensive insight into why the solution is what it is.
Students that focus on ticks and crosses will never improve.
You will only improve once you internalise the mental process by which the solution must be reached.
That's what these science editions are designed to facilitate.
